A resilient supply chain depends on every stage of the process, from mining and refining to battery manufacturing working together.

As demand for critical minerals continues to grow, attention is increasingly shifting beyond resource development to the infrastructure required to transform raw materials into usable products.

Why Cobalt Matters to Modern Defense

Cobalt plays an important role in some of today's most advanced defense technologies.

In lithium-ion batteries, cobalt contributes to energy density, thermal stability, and safety, characteristics that are essential for systems operating in demanding environments. These batteries power a growing range of applications, including unmanned aerial systems, autonomous vehicles, portable military equipment, and communications infrastructure.

Beyond batteries, cobalt is a critical component in high-performance superalloys used in jet engines, gas turbines, missile systems, and other aerospace applications where materials must withstand extreme temperatures and mechanical stress.

Today, the majority of the world's battery-grade cobalt refining capacity is concentrated in China, leaving North American manufacturers reliant on overseas processing. This concentration creates a structural challenge for companies seeking to establish regional battery supply chains. Automotive manufacturers, battery producers, and defense contractors all require reliable access to refined materials not simply mined resources.

Developing refining capacity closer to end markets can help shorten supply chains, improve transparency, reduce transportation risks, and strengthen the resilience of critical manufacturing sectors.

Building a More Integrated North American Supply Chain

Strengthening North America's critical minerals ecosystem requires investment across the entire value chain ranging from responsible resource development to refining, recycling, and advanced manufacturing.
